Dame Jenni Murray

An old chapter closes and new one begins this week as veteran broadcaster Jenni Murray steps down after 33 years with the BBC  as presenter of Radio 4’s Woman's Hour.
Even though Dame Jenni  and her co-presenter Jane Garvey, who is also leaving is the show, will be replaced by  at least one highly  capable and popular broadcaster in the shape of 5 Live and Newsnight presenter Emma Barnett, it feels like the end of an era.
Woman’s Hour is one of the longest running programmes on British radio. It was originally launched in 1946 and Jenni Murray, who is also a popular speaker for Clive Conway Productions,  is its longest serving presenter. Her familiar voice will be inextricably linked with the show in many  listeners heads.
That voice, once described as the most beautiful on radio, first arrived on Woman’s Hour back in 1988 having originally accompanied Jenni during stints on Newsnight and the Today programme.
She sounded gentle and reassuring but was also a sharp and perceptive journalist, never afraid of asking the tough questions.Highly regarded in the industry and beyond, she was made a Dame in 2011.
When she announced she was leaving in the summer she said: “I’ve spent nearly half my life with Woman’s Hour and it’s been a privilege and delight to inform, educate and entertain a loyal and growing audience of women and men. Saying goodbye will be very hard to do, but it’s time to move on.”
Her last show will be on Thursday October 1st. We wish her well for whatever she chooses to do in the future and hope to see her back with CCP soon.
