Reimagining Safer Societies: An Intersectional Approach to Combating Gender-Based Violence

South African Context:

‍As South Africa commemorates 30 years of democracy, the persisting challenge of gender-based violence (GBV) demands urgent attention. Despite progressive constitutional measures and advocacy campaigns, GBV remains pervasive in both public and private spheres, exacerbated by multiple socio-economic conditions. Addressing GBV effectively requires an intersectional approach, acknowledging the interconnectedness of social issues like race, gender, class, and sexual orientation, while promoting equal rights and healing from the legacy of colonialism and apartheid.

‍Reimagining Safer Societies: An Intersectional Approach to Combating Gender-Based Violence in South Africa

‍To further this conversation and work towards tangible solution they are hosting an immersive workshop titled "Reimagining Safer Societies: An Intersectional Approach to Combating Gender-Based Violence in South Africa."

The workshop will feature three key informants:

1.    Bulelwa Adonis: A Social Justice Activist and spokesperson for Women For Change. Bulelwa will share insights into how people are using digital platforms like Instagram and TikTok to mobilise against GBV, giving voice to marginalised individuals.

2.    Mike Abrams: A Personal and Organisational Development Facilitator with extensive experience. Mike will shed light on the intergenerational wounds among South African men resulting from the violence of the apartheid era and how confronting this trauma can inspire peaceful masculinities.

3.    Lucy Campbell: Founder of Transcending History Tours, Lucy will delve into the impact of colonial violence in South Africa and its enduring presence in our society, advocating for cross-cultural understanding and social justice.

‍Workshop Aims:

‍The workshop will feature various segments, including creative exercises, World Café style engagements, reflective writing exercises, and plenary discussions aimed at fostering courageous action. By bringing together diverse perspectives and experiences they aim to deepen the understanding of GBV dynamics in South Africa and collectively envision a safer and more equitable society for all.
