More news about the wonderful Oxford Flute Summer School which will be held at the city’s Radley College this August. The school, which is open to young flute players aged from 15 to 24, has provided vital tuition, experience and encouragement to generations of young flautists for more than 30 years. This summer it takes place from August 15th to 20th and its organisers would love to receive more applications. The only qualification you need is a love of playing the flute. The school was the brainchild of two young teachers, Janet Way and Clive Conway, who discussed starting a flute summer school in Oxford with illustrious guest tutors. The study week each summer provides an environment where flautists of all levels of skill can enjoy group playing and learning through participation.
The Oxford Flute Summer School has been a huge and enduring success and has been made available to even more people by the inclusion full and part-time bursaries awarded to talented young players who would not otherwise be able to attend the course.
This year the school, which takes place from August 15th to 20th August, is welcoming five bursary award winners. Congratulating them, the school’s co-director Katie Bycroft said: “We had a spectacular array of applicants for our bursary fund: thanks to all those who applied. We encourage those who were not successful to apply again next year or to try to find funding to be able to come this year.
But she also urged more participants to sign up, saying: “Running the course this year depends in part on having enough participants - so do consider applying for a place, no deposit required to book. We look forward to welcoming you!”
This summer students will, be under the guidance of top flautists including Robert Winn, Kate Hill,Robert Manasse, Katie Bycroft, Carrie Hensel, Janet Way and others. It has also been announced that Lorna McGhee, principal flautist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, will be a guest at OFSS.
