For the first time since 1988 the highly regarded Oxford Flute Summer School was forced to postpone this August because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
But never fear, plans for next year have already been lined up and OFSS is making its presence felt in lockdown with a series of free online seminars on Zoom and a splendid new website.
It has of course a great heritage to celebrate. It all started back in the 1980s when when two young teachers, Janet Way and our own Clive Conway, discussed starting a flute summer school in Oxford.
At the time there were just a couple of other courses based around particular teachers where students would come to sit at the feet of the master and play only once during the week.
They felt there was a need for a more active week when flautists could enjoy group playing and learn through participation. What’s more it should be a week for everyone, not just those with dizzying technical skills. OFSS was born and for the past 32 years has attracted players of all skills.
Over the years its multi layered course has attracted many advanced players and featured tuition from some of the biggest names in the flute world. But it still provides options for the uncertain returner to the flute world and those who simply play for fun. Everyone’s contribution is equally valued.
In 2009 seeking more space, OFSS moved a short way out of the city to Radley College in Abingdon and it is there that next year’s Summer School will take place from 15th to 20th of August 2021. For bookings and further information see www.oxfordflutes.co.uk
