This year's Annual Desmond Tutu Foundation UK Peace Lecture was presented by The Rt Hon Sir John Major KG CH, in partnership with Brand South Africa, by kind permission of the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC who introduced the evening.
Desmond Tutu was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian, known for his work as an anti-apartheid and human rights activist. He was Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and then Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, and was the first black African to hold either position. The loss of this hero of our time, modest and self-effacing, entertaining and courageous, has been hard for all to bear. Once loathed by many who he opposed, it is testimony to Tutu's greatness that he will surely be remembered by all, whatever their creed, colour, or conviction.
We would like to thank everyone involved with the peace lecture and for honouring the Archbishop's lifelong work to bring peace and justice to the world.
