There’s been a bit of a brouhaha over news that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s trip to South Africa last year cost nearly £250,000
Can’t think why. I’d say it was worth every penny. Not only did the couple’s journey take them and their infant son Archie to South Africa but there were side trips for Harry to Malawi, Botswana and Angola.
And far from being a self-indulgent jolly, it involved some 20 official engagements during which they highlighted the work of many charities. The power of publicity generated by their presence alone must have eclipsed the quarter of a million pound bill.
Just some of the issues addressed included gender-based violence, hunger, tree planting projects and the work of female entrepreneurs.
Crucially of course they also met Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah, introducing little Archie Mountbatten-Windsor to the Tutu family.
The media loved it and news of the Arch meets Arch episode went around the world. The Duke and Duchess got on famously with the Tutu’s and the baby was an absolute delight. An exchange of gifts during the visit found Harry and Meghan receiving a copy of Everyday Ubuntu: living better the African Way, the best selling book written by the Tutu’s granddaughter Mungi Ngomane
Embracing the South African philosophy of inter-connectedness, tolerance, kindness and understanding, it finds Mungi - a patron of the Tutu Foundation UK - taking readers through 14 lessons that can help them implement Ubuntu into their daily lives. It has gone on to become popular all over the world.
