Esteemed royal historian Lucy Worsley has been explaining the circumstances that led to King Henry VIII  beheaded his second wife Anne Boleyn.
Anne was executed  after facing accusations that she had been unfaithful     and committed treason by conspiring against her all powerful husband.
For years  - many scholars believed she’s been falsely framed but now the BBC series Royal History’s Biggest Fibs suggests Anne was probably guilty of treason after all.
After three years the marriage was crumbling. Anne hadn’t given Henry a son and had fallen from favour. He was also becoming interested in lady in  waiting Jane Seymour. A plot was hatched to dispose of Anne who was a far from popular figure  the Royal court.
Lucy says that after Royal fixer Thomas Cromwell had witnesses tortured to provide evidence, Anne was thrown in the Tower facing charges of incest, adultery and plotting to kill the King
But though it now seems the adultery and incest were cooked up charges  there is at least some evidence that Anne may conspired with a suitor to take Edward’s life.
Watch out for Lucy Worsley taking part Clive Conway Productions Curtain Up on-Line series of live-streamed shows soon.
