In this online show, Robert Powell reveals Dickens the celebrity, the social reformer, the actor, the entrepreneur, and, above all, Dickens the supreme entertainer. We celebrate his life and times through his writings and scenes from his best-loved novels.

Robert Powell will trace the fascinating life of the author through his own writings and letters together with those of his friends and contemporaries. The script is illuminated by some of the funniest scenes in all literature as well as some of the most moving, embracing the romantic and the grotesque, the satirical and the macabre. We bring to life Dickens' universally loved characters, from Mr. Pickwick, Mr. Micawber and Mrs. Nickleby, to Mrs. Gamp, Uriah Heep and Scrooge.

"It doesn’t take a big budget TV production to bring the great novelist’s characters to life. Just a terrific actor of the calibre of Robert Powell, his voice familiar from scores of TV voiceovers, and readings just like the ones Dickens gave and which made him the most successful author of his time." - Robert Brookes, The York Press

Although a writer from the Victorian era, Dickens's work transcends his time, language, and culture. He remains a massive contemporary influence throughout the world and his writings continue to inspire film, TV, art, literature, artists, and academia.

Robert Powell is a leading English stage and screen actor who has enjoyed success and critical acclaim for more than 40 years. He is best known for playing the title role in Franco Zeffirelli's groundbreaking TV mini-series 1977 Jesus of Nazareth. Other key roles have included fictional secret agent Richard Hannay in the 1978 film version of John Buchan's The Thirty Nine Steps and the title role in Ken Russell's Mahler. The breadth of his work is astonishing.
